Ludovico Ariosto, Italian playwright and poet (1474 – 1533). His best known work, Orlando Furioso gave a 16th century retelling of the medieval epic The Song of Roland, and helped maintain the popularity of the genre of epic chansons de gestes well past their medieval best before date. It would be the popularity of the form of literature that Miguel Cervantes satirized in his Don Quixote, 1605 – 1615.
