July 23, 1840: This week we’ve had British Columbia join Canada and the Treaty of Union creating Great Britain. Today we have a bit of both. On July 23 1840 the Act of Union was passed, uniting Upper Canada and Lower Canada to create the Province of Canada. It went into effect in 1841 and remained until confederation in 1867.
